Tijdens deze vergadering was ik getuige van het op dat moment heersende politieke landschap. De publiekelijk aangekondigde ontslagen van zittende bestuursleden ontroerde menig hart van de aanwezigen en ontlook op menig gezicht, woede, ongeloof, verbazing en vooral een hoop tranen.

Diverse gevoerde gesprekken met ontslagnemende bestuursleden verruimden mijn inzichten over het hoe en waarom. De gevoerde argumentatie lieten mij de redenen begrijpen, maar bezoedelden tegelijkertijd 'het diep in mijn hart gekoesterde ideaalbeeld van de Kyokushinkaikan-spirit' dat ik sinds mijn eerste stappen in de wereld van de oosterse gevechsporten op zo'n manier dat ik me terugtrok en afstand nam van dit nieuwe kyokushin wereldje.

Tijd heelt wonden?

During this meeting I witnessed the preveiling political landscape at the time. The publicly announced dismisal of sitting board members moved many a heart and on many face , anger, disbelief, surprise and , above all, tears.

Various conversations with resigning boar members broadened my insights about the how and why. The arguments made allowed me to understand the reasons, but at the same time tarnished 'the ideal image of the Kyokushinkaikan spirit cherished in my heart' that , since my first steps in the world of martial arts, I have lost myself in such a way that I withdrew and distanced myself from this new Kyokushin world.

Time heals wounds?

Ik stopte als hoofdinstructeur van mijn dojo Mas. Oyama Kyokushinkai Karate Kalmthout en liet de dojo in bekwame handen achter. Vandaag de dag bestaat de dojo nog steeds en wordt er op een enthousiaste wijze karate gegeven.

Ik werd een ronin, in de plaats van dagelijks les Kyokushinkai te geven, trainde ik zelfstandig en bezocht jarenlang verschillende stijlen om extra kennis op te nemen en nieuwe vaardigheden te leren.

Andere stijlen zoals aikido, kubudo, iaido, jujutsu, krav maga, kick boksing... kwamen aan bod en elke stijl leerde mij nieuwe combinaties, speciale technieken en nieuwe inzichten. Het was een leuke ervaring om even in de anonimiteit te verdwijnen en met een witte gordel helemaal achteraan in blok te staan.

(P.S. niet dat ik lang anoniem kon/mocht meetrainen, elke aandachtige sensei pikte me er steeds na een of twee lessen uit om naar mijn verleden te vragen)

De lessen die ik hieruit trok, verklaar ik graag met een simpele vraag :

Wat is het beste boek?

In elke bibliotheek staan duizenden boeken, fiction/non fiction, thrillers, romans...

Als je nog nooit een boek hebt gelezen, dan snuffel je rond in de verschillende categorieën totdat je iets vindt, wat je smaakt.

Naarmate je meer over iets leest, vergroot jouw kennis, word je kritischer en is het steeds moeilijker een beter boek te vinden.

Verander je van categorie, dan start je weer van voorafaan, met dit verschil dat je veel sneller je weg zal vinden naar het betere boek.

Een goede bibliothecaris zal jou direct opmerken.

Vervang categorie door gevechtstijl en betere boek door senpai/sensei/shihan...

Nu weet ik, dat je nooit weet.

2003

I quit as the head instructor of my dojo Mas. Oyama Kyokushinkai Karate Kalmthout and left the dojo in capable hands. Today the dojo still excists and karate is taught enthusiastically.

I became a ronin, instead of teaching Kyokushinkai every day, I trained independently and visited different styles to absorb additional knowledge and learn new skills.

Other styles such as aikido, kubudo, iaido, ju jutsu, krav maga, kick boxing... were visisted, each style taught me new combinations, special echniques and new insights.

It was a nice experience to disappaer into anonymity for a while and to stand at the very end of the block with a white belt.

(p.s. not that I could/was allowed to train anonymously for long. Every attentive instructor always pucked me out after one or two lessons to ask about my past.)

I like to explain the lessons I learned from this with a simple question :

What's the best book?

Each library contains thousands of books, fiction/non-fiction, thrillers, novels...

If you've never read a book, you browse throught the different categories until you find something you like.

As you read more about something, your knowledge increases, you become more critical and it becomes increasingly difficult to find a better book.

If you change category, you start again from the beginning, with this difference that you will find your way to the better book much faster.

A good librarian will notice you right away.

Replace category with combat style and better book with better senpai/sensei/shihan...

Now I know, that you never know.
